BREAKING NEWS: SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT CHANGES

The Town of Port Hawkesbury has recently amended the Solid Waste Management By-Law and we are happy to introduce Green Cart Collection for the separation of organics as a service to residents.  Residential curbside green cart collection will begin on April 20th. In addition to providing green carts, we will be making some additional changes as follows:

·We will be changing to using “clear bags” only for household regular garbage.  Don’t worry you will have some time to use up your remaining black bags, and two small privacy bags are allowed in your clear bag.

·We will be adjusting our curbside collection schedule, more to follow on this.  Everyone will be provided with copies of updated pickup schedules, sorting sheets and contact information to help with questions and concerns.

·Your new residential green cart will be provided free of charge and each home will be given a new small kitchen size bin.

·Bi-weekly curbside pickup scheduling will begin April 20th.  This means that green carts and clear bags will be collected bi-weekly (every other week), and recycled waste in blue bags will be collected the following week.  We will be providing everyone with an updated pickup schedule and sorting sheet.

·Green carts will be delivered to all residential homes the week of April 13th, more information to follow.

By composting in your home, you can contribute to a greener planet by reducing methane gas and creating natural soils that can help to reverse climate change.  It is easy to do, and you can feel good about helping the environment.
